BLAIR COUNTY BIRDS & BATS
Blair County is home to some of the finest birding sites in Pennsylvania and location of the largest maternity colony of little brown bats in the North East United States. We will take short hikes at 2 premier birding sites listed in the Susquehanna River Wildlife and Birding Trail by PA Audubon. Then witness the evening emergence of some 20,000 bats from a church in Canoe Creek State Park at dusk. Hollidaysburg
- Stay at the Comfort Inn in Altoona, leave at 2 PM for the Lower Trail from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM ~17 miles. Motor Coach to the Lower Rail Trail for an easy 1 mile guided walk to bird along the Frankstown Branch of the Juniata River noted for wood warblers.
- Return to Hollidaysburg for dinner at the Dream Restaurant
4:00 PM – 6:00 PM ~12 miles...Famous for home cooking and fabulous desserts - An evening at Canoe Creek State Park from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM~7 miles - Take an early evening guided birding hike along Beaver Pond Trail to observe and listen to field birds and amphibians preparing for their night time activities. Then assemble at the bat church for an educational program by a Park Naturalist as 20,000 bats stream out of the church attic as the sun sets.
- Motor Coach to Comfort Inn from 9:00PM – 10:00 PM~12miles - Along the return trip, stop for a late night ice cream cone at the Meadows Custard Stand.
