CENTRE REGION FARMS
The Pennsylvania State University founded in 1855 as a Farmer’s High School has had a profound affect on agriculture in the Centre Region of Pennsylvania. Nestled throughout the Nittany Valley are the University’s experimental agriculture farms as well as the most modern dairy farms in the United States, A GROWING Christmas tree industry and small vineyards producing the finest wine PA has to offer.
State College
- Stay at the Days Inn downtown State College Lv. 8:00 AM
8:00 AM – 9:30 AM 5 miles After a short drive you’ll think you arrived at Christmas in July as you are surrounded by thousands of live evergreen trees being primed for someone’s special tree. Learn about growing and marketing Christmas trees followed by an opportunity to visit a small gift shop specializing in local crafts and food delicacies
- Grange Fair Grounds and Guest Quality Foods Plant
10:00 AM – 11:30 AM 10 miles Learn about the oldest farmer’s tenting fair in the United States. Then on to a factory tour of a well known vegetable processing plant founded in Hanover, PA.
- Lunch at the Whistle Stop Restaurant
11:30 AM – 12:30 PM Local restaurant converted from a historic train station next to the tracks in Center Hall.
- Mount Nittany Vineyard and Winery
12:30 PM – 2:15 PM 6 miles As we pull up to the vineyard at the base of Mount Nittany, the view if the 10 acre vineyard and the distant Tussey Mountains is breathtaking. Inside the Swiss chalet winery, you’ll have the opportunity to taste local wines and have a guided tour of the wine aging and bottling process. Local wines and gifts are for sale in the chalet.
- Penn State Ag Research Station and Pasko Antique Farm Machinery Museum at Rock Springs
2:15 PM – 4:00 PM 18 miles Drive thru tour of a portion of the 10,000 acres of Penn State’s agriculture research fields where anything from corn to prairie grasses are being grown on controlled plots. Stop at the antique farm machinery museum on the site of the largest outdoor agricultural related equipment fair in the North East United States each August.
- Evergreen Dairy Farm
4:00 PM – 5:15 PM 6 miles Witness a modern 24/7 dairy farm operation from a loft overlooking the milking parlor. 7. The Penn StateCreamery 5:15 PM – 6:30 PM 20 miles Enjoy a delicious dairy treat at the famous creamery on Campus that taught Ben and Jerry how to make ice cream. NO MIXING FLAVORS, A PENN STATE TRADITION!!
