BEDFORD WILDLIFE TOUR

Everyone loves seeing wildlife and Bedford County has a unique variety of wildlife that can be seen on a loop drive within the County. Some animals are truly wild and can be seen only by luck of the day while others are confined and are always available for viewing. Let’s get started on our animal adventure at Shawnee State Park.

  1. 9:00 AM – Meet Step on Guide at Sheetz Store Turnpike Exit, Bedford. Begin tour traveling along historic U.S. Route 30 West, the Lincoln Highway to Schellsburg, 9 miles west of Bedford
  2. 9:30 AM – Turn onto Shawnee State Park Road and tour thru the main portion of the park looking for white tailed deer, song birds, and a variety of waterfowl along the route. Cross a bridge onto an island, formerly a dairy farm, now housing State Parks Region 3 Office Complex.
  3. 10:00 AM – Leave Shawnee, return to U.S. Route 30 and head west to the Bison Corral where the buffalo roam within the confines of large pastures. Make a stop at the Bison Corral Gift Shop for some Native American gifts.
  4. 11:00 AM – Continue on U.S 30 West for 1 mile, turn onto Hoover Road towards New Paris with a quick stop at Helixville Winery, then onto lunch at the Apple Bin Restaurant near Pleasantville.
  5. 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM – Lunch at Apple Bin Restaurant and Gift shop on PA Route 56 South of Pleasantville.
  6. 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM – Arrive at Whitetail Wetlands for a horse drawn wagon ride around this varied habitat managed for more than 200 species of bird life.
  7. 3:00 PM – Stop at Reynoldsdale Fish Hatchery to witness a trout hatchery and rearing operation by the Pennsylvania Fish Commission.
  8. 4:00 PM – Continue on PA Route 56 South to old U.S. Route 220 North with a final stop at Fisher’s Country Store which sells a huge variety of bulk food items, home baked goods, and local produce.
  9. 5:00 PM – Return on old U.S. Route 220 South to the turnpike Bedford interchange with your heart content and bellies full of all those good bulk foods.
